After some testing it seems that Intervention Image crashes when I try to manipulate animated webps. This means I can't create a thumbnail.

So for now I disable animated webps in user posts, but they should keep working in comments as I don't manipulate comment images.

Unfortunately that wouldn't work. Very different concepts.

Video hosting is expensive. 4chan can get away with it because they just get deleted after a few days. Mainchan makes no money so not really an expense I want to add.
