It seems that the "chan" name might be holding mainchan back. I've seen a lot of apprehension regarding joining the site due to it.

Should I change it to something else?

It's a culture thing.

Hard agree.

Reddit was an online larping community for neckbearded 20somethings who wanted to roleplay having a PhD. I've said it before on here, what blows my mind is how 99% of Reddit comments that make some kind of scientific claim or other claim that would require sources or evidence in the real world, have no sources or evidence to back it up. Reddit bred pompousness because of its anonymity.

Also, no community should become this:

> Anne frankly, I did nazi that coming. I literally came here to say this but boy, that escalated quickly so to the top with you! Lost it at 'This is why we can't have nice things' and then my faith in humanity was restored, my mind blown, and manly tears were shed. Well said. As a 'murican, I can confirm this gem has just won the internet and is doing it right. Just sayin', I know that feel, bro, and while that was a risky click, this post was a 9/10, 11/10 with rice, would read again. I see what you did there and it feels good man. You're doing God's work, son. I laughed way harder than I should have at your list that seems legit and totally nailed it. You - I like you. You magnificent bastard; you, sir, are so brave, a gentleman and a scholar, and seeing how you are a redditor for 4 years, this checks out, so I'll allow it. I regret that I only have one upvote to give for this cool story, bro. CTRL+F "about tree fiddy" was not disappointed. Wait, why do I have you tagged as "NOPE NOPE NOPE"? Nice try, you monster. You are now banned from r/pyongyang What did I just read? Dafuq? I read that as "YOU HAD ONE JOB". I can't fap to this. No true scotsman could see that this relevant XKCD was bad, and you should feel bad. You must be new to reddit, so I'll see your cakeday and raise you a karma train. One does not simply rustle my jimmies, not even once. Jet fuel can't melt dank memes, that stahp gave me cancer for science, so that's enough internet for me today. OP is a fuzzy little man-peach, 2/10, would not bang. What is this I don't even know how is this wtf? Fuck Jenny. Circlejerk must be leaking. This will get buried but brace yourselves, some men want to watch the world burn right in the feels. When you see it, they'll KILL IT WITH FIRE! But this has nothing to do with atheism. Lawyer up, delete facebook, hit the gym, and SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, said no one ever, so you wouldn't download a strawman. r/dadjokes. Damn onions, you scary like a BOSS. whoosh. Since rule #1 is 'be attractive', I'll just leave this here: This is my [f]irst post, be gentle.

TRUE. 4chan is smart people acting like idiots, redditors are idiots trying their hardest to sound smart. They're insufferable.

>4chan is smart people acting like idiots, redditors are idiots trying their hardest to sound smart.

idk, 4chan has a lot of that latter group too. i think the main difference is that they aren't LARPing to gain a reputation, but because they genuinely don't realize how retarded they are.

Perhaps an alternate route. What about multiple domain names? Throw a variable everywhere where the site name/domain is referenced (links, terms of service, site logo, etc.) And just dynamicly load the name based on which domain is being used. For instance the top logo could be "(%variable here).png" in the code and when viewed on mainchan.com would show "mainchan.png" or if viewed on main.social would be "main.png" (foo.com = foo.png etc) always showing the appropriate logo and site name to the visitor for each domain. It would make it possible to add domains for special occassions or as a joke (go to poo.social to load a joke version of the site with a poo emoji logo, brown dark mode and other poop related crap <-- see what I did there?).

Whichever domain pulls in the most users call that one the official domain and the rest alts. I do think sticking with the Main(something) nomenclature would be ideal though since the mainbros/mainhoes stuff is fun.

Edit: Also random feature request, a toggle in user settings to automatically upvote posts you reply to. I feel like a lot of people, myself included, forget to upvote posts when interacting with them.

Is fine, easy to remember and not too similar to other sites I know. People who think "chan" is offensive or aversive, make me question how long they have even been on the Internet. 50/50 they learned about "net culture" from half baked Youtube videos or twitter posts.

In the end, people don't know what they want, do what is best for your own site.

Yeah, "chan" is a magnet for a small niche of degens (like me) that would post content that deters normal people. Maybe name it something to do with Corgis? If you need a hand with anything I'm always browsing wdg.

if it does change make sure it still has the word "main" so we can still call each others mainbros

Yes if we want mainchain to be successful in the broadest possible sense. If a name has negative connotations to it, why keep it? This not a partisan thing either. It's the same with reddit, 9gag, etc etc. However if Mainchan wants to have exclusively have a chan culture and attract people that like that, then keep the chan. I think the question that needs to be answered here is what mainchan is supposed to be.

It's not just about culture though, but also about design. Plenty of people are looking for websites and are joining ships based on what they aim to be. Mainchan seems to just be reddit+4chan. In that case, keep the name.

Imo the people that judge the entire site based on the name you don't want them in your site anyway, but even if you change it I wouldn't care that much as long as it wasn't something completely stupid and even if I find the new name completely stupid I would still participate in it.

Could you do like Scored.co/Communities.win? They're the same website but have different URLs to access it.

I do like the Mainchan name, but normies are afraid of it so...

It's not a chan, so yes, definitely.

Also don't use a 3rd party captcha.

Also don't require a captcha per comment, if you must do it once during login.

Also don't require an email address for sign up, and if you must you should allow temp emails to be used.

it's not a chan but where else can you anon post?

reply permalink report gild save
[–] Quack 1 point

No. That is a terrible idea. The suffix, "chan" perfectly captures the anonymous nature of this website. Furthermore, most users are already used to the name, "Mainchan". Trying to appeal to Redditora by changing the name will attract the wrong types of people to this site.

People who refuse to use this website because of its name are exactly the type of people that ruined Reddit. Look at Lemmy, it's a communist cesspool. We just need to shill this site more.
