I checked out kbin, was surprised how active it was but didn't join. I dunno, Mainchan just has more soul or something.

I got banned from kbin within 20 minutes because all my comments were about gay sex.

Yes, but they're compatible. Kbin is PHP and lemmy is rust.

Edited to expand:

They both run on ActivityPub, the same technology Mastadon uses if you remember that. I didn't care about twitter so I never paid attention then but this reddit mess has made me actually want to learn about federation.

So in a way you can think of lemmy and kbin as different email clients that may have different UIs and some differences in functionality but they share the same open protocol so they *can* intercomunicate (though they could choose not to). You can follow a community started in a lemmy server from a kbin acct because they are federated together.

There's a bit more to it but idk if anyone actually cares. I'm just a nerd.

>I will only ban people if they make calls for violence, post anti-jew or over the top racism, advertising, pro pedophilia posts, spam posting of single ideas or memes, posts that lay out plans for crimes, posts that suggest you were going to harm yourself, or someone else with plans laid out, especially in regards to children, or violations of the patriot act which I have read. As second in command on the exploding heads instance, this is my decree. And also for those confused about who we are, we are a group of libertarians, conservatives, shit, posters, people exiled from pig tack, civic nationalists, free speech advocates, supporters of religious freedom, believers in the constitution and regular every day people. I have a long history of allowing speech of all kinds, and I have made my mistakes along the way, which is why I blatantly and unapologetically do not allow over-the-top racism or anti-Jew material. There is a major difference between being anti-Jew, and saying that George Soros is an evil man. There is a big difference between being a racist and saying that Black Lives Matter the organization is a corrupt organization that stole lots of money from people, and all you have to do is look up how they’re founders bought mansions, and in some cases, escorts meaning prostitutes with the money given to them. I don’t think that most of the people reading this will truly understand the difference between civic nationalism and fascism. Just like there is a huge difference between traditional Marxism and the type of tyrannical communism that Joseph Stalin ran there is a huge difference between a trump supporting civic nationalist, and a Jew hating, POC hating white supremacist, skinhead ethno-nationalist. Also, in my opinion, there is a huge difference between being someone who wants to see gay people burned alive in a bonfire versus someone who is against gender studies being taught in public schools or a school teacher, celebrating their sexuality and talking to children about getting a sex change behind their parents backs. I did not come here to make friends, although I have found some along the way. I post on the Internet because I have a set of opinions just like many of you have a set of opinions and an agenda. One thing I will never do is post false information and if I get called out for it, I will keep that information on the Internet. I try to post truthful information and there is a difference between truthful information and an opinionated message. As for my relationship with the LGBT community, I have had many gay friends over the years, and my cousin is a transgender, and I actually beat someone up for talking shit to them. Now about my cousin, he was a hermaphrodite, born with both a penis and a vagina, but he looked like a boy. He had to take hormones and go through surgery in order to be the woman that he really was and that she really is today. If she had gone through with staying a boy, she would’ve died at a very young age because her internal chemistry and biology was that of a woman, but she had a penis that was essentially non-functional. I am not against people getting sex changes. I personally believe that sex changes, except in the case of being a hermaphrodite should only be allowed age 16 and up if the parents and the child are involved and on board with it and after age 18, I believe you should be able to do whatever you want. And by the way, I’m a really big queen fan and I love Boy George and his music. I’m also a huge Elton John fan and I like Frank Ocean as an artist. One of my favorite movies is Robin Williams, the one who flew into the birdcage, or whatever it’s called, but basically the premise of the movie is a conservative guy, whose daughter is marrying a guy who is adopted by a gay couple, and they own a drag queen club. Excuse my word salad, but I have a lot of thoughts and given that I am administrator of exploding heads unless the other administrator asked me to step down I am going to share my thoughts and also I will not prevent others from sharing theirs. And by the way anyone from any of the other instances that ever want to promote I don’t know communism or Marxism, or pro LGBT material on exploding heads, feel free to do so, and I’m not saying this because I need to users because honestly I really don’t give a fuck. Just don’t be mad when we share our thoughts and if you don’t like somebody or a certain community, I would suggest blocking that community or blocking that person but don’t come to me complaining about anything except calls for violence, posts of anti-jew or over the top racism, advertising, pro pedophilia posts, spam posting of single ideas or memes, posts that lay out plans for crimes, posts that suggest you were going to harm yourself, or someone else with plans laid out, especially in regards to children, or violations of the patriot act. FYI feel free to fact check any of my posts, I’m interested in the truth not bull shit lies or fals

federated reddit clones. Kinda feels like old school web if the boards could posts on each other.

Reddit wannabes that are "federated." Meaning you have a bunch of separate servers and have to pick one to join. Then they share content with each other. Until an admin decides they don't like this other server and block it. And so on.

If the server you're on dies or stops federating, you get to join another server to get the shared content. Bonus round: all the communities are federated but they're created at the server. Meaning you get a tech group on server1, then someone created another tech group on server3. Suddenly you've got 10 tech groups. Fun stuff.

Regarding your last point that's not that different from reddit. /r/games vs /r/gaming for example.

reply permalink report gild save

It's worse because at least /r/games and /r/gaming are obvious. It's a pain with /c/technology and !lemmy.world@technology. Then some user creates yet another technology instance because the default view for communities on Lemmy instances is "Local". So Bob checks communities, doesn't switch to "All" and can't find a bass community so he creates one. Except there's already a bass community on another server but Bob didn't check All. Just Local. Rinse and repeat until people read the how-to guides (assuming one gets posted to their local server) and understand it.

Of course, that also assumes people want to stay. Some looked around for a bit, found it confusing, and left.

Kbin is a bit better. They hide the server names for the communities giving at least a better presentation. They also show all content rather than split local and federated. The downside with Kbin is that their federated content is often a lot more limited. I'll hit a federated community and get the warning that this is cached content and I should visit the instance itself for up-to-date content.

It's also assuming searching "All" works. Hint: it doesn't. If no one on your instance is subscribed to a sublemmy (or whatever) from another instance you might be interested in, then you won't see it.

At least one person has to go out of their way to manually add this undiscovered sub. Let's say there's a Mainchan sub on lemmy.one. Searching for Mainchan on "All" from lemmy.world won't return shit if no one on lemmy.world already knows about this sub. Even if World and One are federated.

If you *know* it exists, you can force your instance to look for it by searching for "!Mainchan@lemmy.one". First you won't get any result, but wait for up to 30sc and it'll show up. It's stupid as fuck but from then on, people on World will be able to easily find this sub.

It's garbage and promotes fragmentation.

>Kbin is a bit better. They hide the server names for the communities giving at least a better presentation.

There are some things kbin does better but this is not one of them to me. I find it far more confusing to be browsing all and having no clue what the context of the submission is. Sometimes it's obvious but other times it's from the official community of a lemmy instance and I hate having to figure out where I have to click to find out.

I suppose I was thinking of it more from the community name perspective. On Lemmy, I might see technology, then !beehaw.org@technology, then some other server's technology. Kbin was just showing them all as technology. You could use the mouse to hover the link and see which technology community it actually is.

That said, Kbin's cache of all those other communities isn't very good.

If that's really important to you I can confidently say without even having to look that's there's lemmy instances all about that if you really wanna look for them.

tbh it would probably be as easy as checking out instances beehaw has defederated with and looking for the worst domain names.
