Reddit won't be able to save itself. It's le atheist gentlesirs addicted to posing as PhD's on the platform who will return to get their fix of anonymous ego boosting.
I didn't start using Reddit until grad school in 2012 but it took me about a day of looking at the comments to realize what was going on. It's 20something dudes larping as PhD's on an anonymous social news site. 99.99% of comments trying to make some kind of scientific claim or any other claim that would normally require heavy citation back-up in any academic environment has no sources or anything to back it up.
Then just visiting the subreddits related to things I'd consider myself an expert on and seeing the bullshit info littering the comments made me realize it's a... le circlejerk. And le 20something dudes love to le jerk it.
They need more subs to join the protest. RN reddit's algo is promoting the subs that didn't go dark to make it look like business as usual.
over 8000 subs are dark right now.
