I want to get into the Soulslike series of games but I don't have a controller. Should I get the Xbox controller or the Sony Dualsense one? Maybe some other one? The only experience with controllers I've had in my life was on PS2 and I remember not really liking the controller there.

I prefer the Playstation controller because of where the thumbsticks are placed, so I recommend it.

paddles on the back are nice for kick and lunge attacks since the button+stick combos can be hard to hit 100% of the time

IDK, but i like it.
I grew up with PS2 so I got myself a DualShock 4 one. Also, if you plan to play Dark Souls 3 on PC, it's ported so poorly that it'll show Playstation buttons in the tutorial.
I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up. I was actually thinking about starting with DS 1.
