Anyone else watch this show? If so what did you think? My thoughts...

With talent from shows like Flight of The Concords and What We Do in The Shadows you'd think 'Our Flag' would be comedy gold. But to me the show suffers from the ideological pandering some call wokeness. Some of it is fine: female shipmate disguised as a male who's the toughest member of the crew, fine, a trope even. Her interracial romance with the overweight black guy, fine. A very gay scribe on a pirate ship, fine whatever he's one of the funnier characters. The interracial crew, fine, piracy was carribean, I buy it.

Where it gets pandering is when they make Blackbeard and Bonnet a gay couple. These are two real historical figures, neither of which were gay. They were two raping and pillaging sumbitches existing in 16 and 1700's. The whole show bends around this relationship and at that point it starts to go off the rails for me.

Fun takes a backseat to Rhys and Taika giving each other googly eyes and kissing under moonlight, a sight I never wanted burned into my retinas (I'm a bisexual man and was still squicked out). Suddenly Blackbeard and Bonnet are off on their own story which is more drama than comedy and the whole dynamic of the thing become this labored coming out story slash boy loses boy story that was not what I personally wanted out of the show. It felt like a bait and switch: come for the silly pirate comedy, stay for the ...woke messaging and old men kissing? Ug. I'm sick of this afterschool special stuff.

Well at least One Piece is fucking awesome.
