It's not necessarily unsettling, and I have no evidence to back this up, but:
I believe the reason why dogs and cats are not eaten as food is because their value in finding and protecting food outweighed their value as actual food to our ancestors. Dogs can help us hunt. Cats can get rid of vermin in our food stores.
