1. Your genes (over which you had no control)
2. The enviroment you were born into (over which you had no control)
The genes encompass everything from your fetal life to the development of every, single one of your ancestors and what they lived through (causing changes to your genes, the sum of which constitute you). The enviroment has an effect too, like what culture you were brought up in, were you exposed to trauma at an early age, was your mother exposed to trauma while she was pregnant with you, did you eat well as an infant etc. To figure out why you are the way that you are, you have to go step by step from the start of the universe to find out the chain of events that made you into the person that would even ponder "why am I the way that I am?". There is no "you" inside there that can make decisions independent of those two main factors as well as variables like: did you eat well recently, are you sleepy, scared, aroused, worried etc. And all of those have a causal chain going back to the start of the universe that would play out exactly the same if you could press a rewind button. There is solace in the fact that no matter how your life turns out, it was supposed to turn out that way.

What a messed up path we took then, huh. I like to imagine that a multiverse is real and every life we could have taken came to pass somewhere in the folds of reality.

free-will is a component of the soul, and is un-originated and independent. It is what moves without being moved upon and allows one to act without regards to the conditions you describe.
Me too. Especially people that try to turn it into some kind of revolutionary movement to change society. The irony is just palpable.
