Here is a good entry level, basic and fun recipe which only have 2 ingredients. Potassium Nitrate (KNO3), which is also known as saltpeter, and Sugar (C12H22O11). You mix the 2 in a ratio of 3:2, so for every 3 units of potassium nitrate, you add 2 units of sugar. So if you want to make 1 kg, you would add 600g of potassium nitrate and 400g of sugar.

Now you can just mix it in powder form and use it that way, but if you want the most optimal product, you need to mix the 2 and then melt it using a heat plate or just a simple stove, (BIG WARNING, this is very much flammable and so if you don't handle it with care, you can set your kitchen on fire very easily. I know from experience of too many close calls). Once you have the producted melted, it should look and smell like caramel, you can pour it in some container (made of paper), and set it off. enjoy the show!
